Why invest in Mallorca ?

In 2005 Mallorca celebrated 100 years as a tourist destination. This milestone is impressive when taking into account that for so many of those years, visitors would have undertaken long journeys by rail, road, sea and mule to get to this gem of an island in the Mediterranean. The same reasons that people would be willing to make that journey over 100 years ago are fundamentally still the same reasons that some 12 million visitors journey to the island each year. The airport and cheap air travel makes the journey much easier than years gone by, but the unique charm of Mallorca is still to be found.

It is this that attracts so many people the island. The mix of sea, mountain, culture and sun is hard to beat for an island destination in Europe. Mallorca has seen massive investment over the past few decades, particularly with the advent of cheap air travel and package holidays in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.

The property boom during the late 90’s was a consequence of German economic change and set the island’s property on course for price levels now rivalling London’s top addresses. One recent report states that property prices rose by an average of 17% last year alone.

Mallorca has the potential to sustain its popularity and success, but not without pitfalls. The massive expansion of the islands urban areas during the 90’s was more out of speculation than necessity and this has continued almost unabated. However, the new cosmopolitan buyer is more discerning in taste and demanding on quality of both build and lifestyle. Buildings should be constructed with not only financial but also ecological and environmental considerations in mind. By nature of being an island, Mallorca has limited natural resources, meaning much of what we build with and consume has to be brought to the island.
